Significant Objects for a Significant Cause

How can you take a simple, dime store tchotchke and turn it into something valuable?  Just ask Rob Walker and Josh Glenn, founders of the Significant Objects project. These gentleman started Significant Objects to test the hypothesis that objects derive their significance from the stories that accompany them. “We wondered if a story could simply be made up, and more or less imposed on an object, and whether that would increase its meaning and value,” says Rob. So, they set out to find out, and ended up with one awesome project!

Let’s fast-forward through Significant Objects’ development. Rob and Josh thrift for random objects.  They recruit talented authors to write stories about these finds. The items are listed on eBay. They sell for more than they originally cost. Now, rewind, and watch the clip again, because the project is replicated with a round two. This time, though, the objects and authors are different, and the money is being donated to charity.

One last time, rewind that reel of reality – Significant Objects is now in its third incarnation. Last Friday kicked off another week-long auction, when Round 3 of Significant Objects was published. The current auction will continue for 4 more days (today not included), and the proceeds will be donated to Girls Write Now, an NYC-based charity that helps mentor woman writers in at-risk high schools.

This creative charity auction is pretty darn cool, right? Bid on an object, or just read the stories by visiting the Significant Object Auction page on eBay, or by checking out the Significant Objects site.

Had you heard of this project before? Do you find it as cool as we do?

I think any chance to raise money for charity is great, but I have to confess I’m left feeling a little uncomfortable with the whole false advertising angle. I don’t think it’s good to in essense rip people off by selling them something for more money, under false pretenses….

i agree with amanda. i think the concept is cool and i’m glad they are raising money for charity, but it feels a bit deceitful to me…
