For the #Fashiontruth Monthly Spotlight in 2015, we chatted with Riley Silverman, writer, comedian and avid Doctor Who cosplay fan. In 2015, she inspired us with her story of navigating her passion for writing and comedy as a transgender woman. Her truth? Conquering her fears by embracing challenging experiences and connecting with her truest self through personal style.
Since our Q & A in 2015, Riley Silverman hasn’t missed a beat. She released her first comedy album, Intimate Apparel. She was featured as a rising star in the comedy show Everything is Fine! and early this year, she appeared in SYFY’s 20 Women to Watch in 2020.
In honor of bringing back our #Fashiontruth feature, now known as Tell It Like It Is, we wanted to take a moment to catch up with longtime ModCloth community members such as Riley Silverman! Keep reading to get reacquainted with Riley!
Comedy and Cosplay
Outside of comedy, Riley Silverman is connected to the imaginative world of cosplay, bringing iconic characters to life through costume. Riley is a cast member on The Broken Pact, a show that streams on Dungeons and Dragon’s official Twitch channel. She also stars on Game of Rassilon, a Doctor Who role playing podcast.
Riley’s passion for Doctor Who is present in her everyday style. Her style has evolved from vintage-inspired to reflecting her love for sci-fi and the iconic Doctor Who cast. “I think I’ve embraced my nerdiness in my style a lot more again. For a long time, especially when I was beginning my transition, I was really heavily hitting a sort of vintage, high femme look,” said Riley.
Riley creates a balance by including notable pieces worn by her favorite characters in a wearable, street-worthy way. “As time has gone on and I’ve grown more comfortable in my own skin and living as myself, I’ve incorporated a lot of geeky styles or bounding vibes back into my looks. Nerdy, but make it fashion, so to speak.”
Fashion Meets Fandom
We are taking a page from Riley’s style book. She is a master at blending basics with personality and classics with a sense of humor. Her style embodies an edge that is all her own, while nodding to the moments in pop culture that inspire her.
Riley is wearing the Current Mood Van Gogh Graphic Tee, boasting illustrations of the legendary artist Vincent van Gogh. She paired the tee with the What’s the Vibe? Pendant Necklace. Riley opted for a hero piece in her wardrobe, the Just This Sway A-Line Skirt in Maroon. “The skirt was a simple choice, it’s a cut and style I like for me. I’ve gotten really into midi lengths in the last couple of years.”
Riley accessorizes with a black belt adorned with silver grommets from her own collection to add an edgy vibe. For a similar look, opt for the Sash Samba Belt. A signature to Riley’s style is her bold black boots, no doubt a staple in her wardrobe. To adopt Riley’s look, we recommend the No Substitute Lace-Up Boot or the Heavy Metal Buckled Bootie. We are pretty sure these pieces would get Riley’s mark of approval!
Comedy During COVID
When asked how COVID has impacted her work she says, “Getting onstage again right now feels like a distant dream, and even the streaming RPG shows I was doing are dramatically different now. Can’t imagine getting a group together in a studio around a table any time soon so everything is shifting to online.” But the pandemic isn’t slowing this comedy powerhouse. Amid it all, Riley Silverman is devoting time to writing. No doubt, she will be creating material to keep our spirits high the next time we have a chat.
