Girls of Summer: Lovely Lady Skateboarders from the 1960s

A few weeks back, I found myself on LIFE Magazine’s online photo archives, searching for vintage surfing photos, but was led to surface-skimmers of an entirely different sort: skateboarders. I was pleasantly surprised to find a number of female skateboarders included in LIFE’s feature, including world champ Patti McGee (pictured above), who was the first female pro-skateboarder and first woman inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame.

If you’re looking to have a little fun this summer, why not use these ’60s skateboarders as inspiration, and pick up a board of your own?

About Julie O.

A lover of all things vintage and vintage-inspired, Julie bought her first 1950s frock in the fifth grade. Since then, Julie has become a self-described connoisseur of vintage and thrift shopping, which she shares on her blog, Orchid Grey. When she’s not scouring the racks for the perfect vintage skirt, this native New Englander can be found deftly navigating the slopes of a ski mountain, taking road-trips to the beach, and exploring new places with a vintage camera in her hand.

And unlike the women above, wear a helmet.

These are great! I have seen old 60s competition videos and rarely saw any women involved in them at all.

I just love these photos! It makes me want to do a photoshoot with my own board sometime. And I agree with Tanya!
