What’s even better than a sunny wedding photoshoot of real-life couples, you ask? The true love stories that brought them together!
Step behind the scenes of our Pasadena Courthouse wedding shoot and meet Cheker and Soledad — two roller-derby sweethearts whose love led them from D.C., to Southern California, to a stunning Joshua Tree elopement.
How did you two meet?
Soledad: Cheker and I met in Washington D.C. playing roller derby in 2010. We were Teammates, Derbywives, and Co-Captains before we decided to finally listen to our hearts and start dating in 2011. Cheker was offered a position in Southern California and asked me to move to the Golden State with her and her pup. We drove cross country with all our belongings and little Devonshire and haven’t looked back. It was definitely the best decision I ever made. We have been inseparable for almost 5 years now.
What do you value most about your relationship?
Cheker: I value our true partnership in everything we do together.
Where did you elope and why?
Soledad: After we first got engaged we started the initial process of planning a more traditional wedding. The more we discussed center pieces and guest list the clearer it became that a big wedding wasn’t for us. We wanted to celebrate the commitment that we were making to each other and we wanted to do it our way. We had vacationed in Joshua Tree the year before — it was so peaceful and the scenery was breathtaking; we knew it was the perfect place for us to elope.
Cheker: We eloped because we wanted to keep it simple and about us. We chose Joshua Tree because we fell in love with the scenery and the calm atmosphere while we were up there for a mini vacation last year. Cell service and internet was spotty at best, so it forced us to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle life and focus on each other. It reaffirmed that Soledad is the “one” when we removed all the distractions from the picture. We were both glowing and enjoying each other’s company while exploring and watching the perfect sunset. By the end of the night, our faces were sore from smiling and laughing so much.
What inspired your wedding-day style?
Cheker: We wanted something a little bit out of the ordinary but somewhat casual and comfortable.
Soledad: I knew I wanted to wear a dress for the elopement. Since we were having an outdoor ceremony, I knew it had to work for the desert, but I didn’t want it to be too casual. I saw my dress online and wasn’t sure if it was right, but my gut told me to order it anyway. When it arrived, I knew I was going to love it before I took it out of the box. The color was perfect and it had the right amount of fluff for a good twirl, but not enough to pick up every burr and tumbleweed in the desert. Paired with a great pair of boots and a statement necklace it was the perfect outfit for the perfect day!
Do you have a “song”? What is it?
Soledad: Whitney Houston’s “I Want to Dance with Somebody.” We hadn’t really talked about a song. We were in line to enter the park when our friend asked what our song was. We both looked at each other and shrugged, and she said if you don’t have one you should pick one quick. I grabbed my phone and “I Want to Dance with Somebody” was the first thing that popped into my head! Luckily, we got to finish it before we lost cell service.
What was one wedding detail that was singularly ‘you’?
Cheker: My collar pins. I was so excited to wear them! We also woke up early that morning to go to the Joshua Tree farmers market for flowers. We knew it would be a hit or miss depending on what the florist would bring that day. The flowers were the biggest unknown we had and I knew it was going to be a perfect day as soon as I saw Solie’s eyes light up at the assortment of unique flowers.
Soledad: We asked a teammate and dear friend to officiate. It was also really important to us to have Pippa, our Boston Terrier, present.
How did you celebrate afterwards?
Cheker: We kicked off our shoes and had empanadas and cake!
