It was a perfect autumn day in Wexford, PA. When we first pulled into the parking lot, it was clear that we weren’t the only ones inspired by the blue skies and sunshine to visit Soergel Orchards. Although it’s known for delicious apples and other locally-grown produce and baked goods, Soergel’s is particularly popular at this time of year because of its incredible pumpkin patch. A trip to Soergel’s to fetch the family pumpkin is an autumn tradition for many families in the Pittsburgh area and I have memories (as many of you might) of school field trips where we’d pile into a tractor-pulled wagon for a festive hay ride.
As I walked past the greenhouse, I hoped that I would be able to find the perfect pumpkin at Soergel’s as I had so many years before…
but our first stop was the apple press for a live demonstration of how apples become cider!
We weren’t sure what to visit next: the country store, the wine shop or one of the many food stands, so we decided to mull over our next move while checking out the free samples: roasted chestnuts, gala apples and kettle corn. A loud commotion prompted us to investigate the petting zoo – I was so glad to see that my favorite animal, Noah, was still around … and he seemed pretty happy to see me, too!
After visiting our animal buddies, we made a quick stop at the funnel cake and fries stand. For a special treat, I chose a funnel cake with cinnamon sugar.
While finishing up my sweets, something really special caught my eye: The Sweet Apple Tea Room. Not only do the folks at the Tea Room host fancy tea parties (complete with dress-up clothes, tasty sandwiches and cream puffs), but they also sell vintage ceramics, dishes and other incredibly pretty (and inexpensive) decor. I was happy to find a vintage cookie carousel for only $5.00!
Upon leaving the Tea Room, I decided it was time to search for The Ultimate Pumpkin. As usual, there were hundreds of bright and fresh pumpkins to choose from (and some pretty great-looking gourds, too) !
After selecting a few favorites, we returned home and spent the evening on the porch, turning our wonderful Soergel selections into Jack-O-Lanterns, feeling as though autumn had finally arrived!
