Dad’s Style Redux

Forget #dadbod — today we’re talkin’ about dad’s style. Ever take a peek at pics of your pop’s glory days? We’re betting you were surprised to see how hip he was, and dare we say, perhaps even a bit inspired. What better way to pay homage to your fave dude than incorporating some of his style into your own? Check out how a few ModClothers are inspired by their father’s fashion!

See that black and white photo at the top right? It’s from a newspaper feature about my dad in the early 80s that detailed his inability to escape requests for autographs, stares, and one constant question: “Are you Bruce Springsteen?” His striking resemblance to The Boss aside, my dad’s style was heavily influenced by an affinity for his Harley Davidson lowrider and his all-American, blue collar upbringing — jeans, tees, bandanas, and boots were all a big part of his repertoire.

My dad passed away just over two years ago in a motorcycle accident, but I think of him and miss him every single minute of every single day. Rocking some of his signature style go-tos is one small thing I do to feel closer to him and help keep his memory alive, so I go for modern spins on his classic, timeless look: moto-style booties, classic denim, bandana-inspired headbands, and — of course — vintage-inspired Springsteen t-shirts.

My dad Tom is a wise, successful lawyer, which means he spends a lot of time in a suit. But when he’s not on the clock, his look is a little less courtroom and a little more rock ‘n’ roll. Tom’s been a guitarist and song-writer since he was a kid, and his more bohemian side pops up here and there in his style — an understated, yet cool leather jacket, a longer, devil-may-care hairstyle, and quirky, round glasses are some of his current signatures.

I think I mirror some of my dad’s sensibilities when it comes to style, especially since I gravitate towards more menswear-inspired outfits, anyway. I tend to turn up the volume on the edgy accents (enter this awesome Mick Jagger tee), but Dad’s fondness for denim, crisp, neutral colors, and pieces perfect for casual Fridays (like these Oxford-inspired sandals) — that’s all there.

LOVE Dad style! My dad was such a Bruce as well. He even kept a lot of his old concert tees! I have been lucky enough to inherit them and have a few that I wear to work out or with some of my ModCloth skirts! He was such a tiny scrawny guy back then – even one of his old leather jackets used to fit me! I loved it!
