Gold Medal Glamour

My interest in fashion came later in life.  The majority of my youth was spent running bases, evading defenders, and dreaming of becoming an Olympian. So, with the Vancouver Games in full-swing, you can imagine my excitement – the drama, the glory, the heartbreak, and of course  – the outfits!

From bathing dresses to bikinis, women’s sportswear has taken quite the journey over the past century. This week, I’ll be exploring Olympic-inspired fashions, starting with this vintage shot of Carol Heiss, the 1960 Olympic Gold Medalist in Figure Skating. The first woman to land a double axle in competition, Heiss is seen here performing in Central Park in a chic collegiate-inspired outfit. I love how her sweet girl-next-door ensemble allows her extraordinary athleticism to shine through. Plus, if you’re going to be spinning and twisting – of course you should show off a twirling skirt – just remember to wear leggings underneath!

If you are loving Carol’s look, try pairing together the Belle of the Ball Skirt in Charm with the My Antonia Top.

Have you been watching the Olympics? Which athlete’s style do you love?

Aww, I love her look! I’ve been into the “skater” dresses I’ve seen on some, ahem, other websites for a while now! Modcloth should totally get some!
