Spikey and approximately the size of a tennis ball, my first encounter with a hedgehog was in college. Pulled from the cargo pocket of a friend’s pair of shorts (where the little ‘hog had been happily snoozing away during our drawing class), the sweet creature was met with intrigue and plenty of “oohs” and “ahhs.” At the time, hedgehogs were a rather rare animal companion to have, but these days — largely thanks to Instagram — it seems the prickly pets are everywhere.
While they certainly are cute, I’m apt to be wary when any animal becomes trendy to own. Like any pet, hedgehogs are a lot of work, and unfortunately many people may not realize that. For now, I’m perfectly fine following the adventures of Biddy the Hedgehog, above, from my Instagram feed (the little guy travels everywhere!), or watching Maruturo, below, crash through bowling pins on Vine — and maybe even picking up one of the cute hedgie-themed items on the site. With all this talk of hedgehogs, we’re wondering what YOU think: Would you take the leap to hedgehog ownership? Be sure to share in the comments!
Umm, could he be much stinkin’ cuter?! What a little doll!! I have a wee hedgie necklace- he is called Sebastian <3 Alex
I wanted a hedgehog pretty badly for a while! They’re illegal in my county, though, so I couldn’t get one. Recently I adopted a bunny and I have fallen in love– so no hedgie for me for quite a while. Perhaps when I have kids they’ll want one…
Wouldn’t mind more hedgehog things on the site, though! I have several plushes and a necklace, t shirt, and pajama pants. Maybe it’s time for a skirt or dress. 😉
My fiance and I want a pet besides my giant lake fish that I keep and we can’t have a cat or anymore dogs because I have 5 that live with my mom so we are going to take the leap and get a hedgehog. My bestfriend and her husband have one and they take it everywhere with them and it is such a loving little pet. It’s a lot of work but they give you much more of a reward as opposed to rabbits and hamsters. Much more intelligent too.
Hedgehogs are so adorable! I’m so glad that they’re already starting to get recognize in their natural form instead of just being “Sonic the Hedgehog”.
