You want your school mascot to be something frightening, something grand, or something august, right? Something like The Warriors, The Tigers, The Spartans, or The Fighting Okra. The Fighting Okra? What? Can someone please break out into a rendition of “One of These Things is not Like the Other?”
Yes, it’s true. There are some mascots out there that are purely baffling, absolutely bamboozling, simply befuddling. So, sit down, take a deep breath, and prepare yourself for a barrel of laughter – the “Top Ten Strangest School Mascots!”
10. The Hubbers of Smethport High School. A wheel. Must have thought they were on a roll when they came up with this one.
9. The Anchormen of Rhode Island College. I wonder if their color is burgundy – Ron Burgundy that is.
8. The Artichokes of Scottsdale Community College. Nutritious, delicious, and oh so… frightening?
7. The Blue Hose of Presbyterian College. If it’s a garden hose, I don’t get it. If it’s hose as in tights, I expect their mascot to be quite fashionable.
6. The Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz. What are you gonna do, ooze all over me?
5. The Brewers of Vassar College. Seems a ‘beer-y’ ironic choice for a college mascot.
4. The Claim Jumpers of Columbia College. Before you can even get the words out of your mouth, they’ll shout, “You are NOT better than us!”
3. The Mighty Macs of Immaculata University. A computer, a raincoat, or a burger? Which one is it?
2. The Fighting Pickles of North Carolina School of the Arts. How can someone with a functioning ‘brine’ think up such a thing?
1. The Dirtbags of Long Beach State Baseball Team. Something to be proud of, for sure.
What’s your school mascot?
My high school mascot was a bullfrog. I get the whole “embarrassing mascot” thing. 🙂
Don’t forget the Geoduck of Evergreen State College! 😛
GO BREWERS! i’m honored we made the list!
Me too! I’m from Smethport and we’re about the only ones that isn’t a college.
My school is the Pirates, but another cool one is the NC School of Science and Math Unicorns.
haha ours is the bulldog.
i live in a town where our teams are called the Orphans. The girl’s teams are the Annies..
The Anchorman & your pun on it was my favorite until i reached #1 – The Dirtbags! Really? hahah
You missed San Benito High School in CA: the Haybalers (yes, like big burly men who bale hay).
Ha, I knew Santa Cruz would be on here! 100% Slug! 😀
Williams College: The Purple Cows
In Maine there’s a high school (Winthrop High School) whose mascot is a giant schoolbus; they call themselves the Ramblers
My high school mascot was a mermaid. Our sports teams? The Fighting Mermaids. Even boys’ basketball… and no, we didn’t have a swim team.
We were the bulldogs as well, but nearby there was a school whose mascot is a “Beet Digger” It always sort of sounded like some derogatory term to me.
Go Smethport Hubbers!
Hurray for Artie the Artichoke! He was my mascot for 2 years.
Ohio Wesleyan University has the Fighting Bishops and my friend who went to a high school in PA said he mascot was a hat. She lived in Hatsboro, PA!
Can’t believe you left out my alma mater. Geoducks 🙁
The South Webster Jeeps.
Webster University: The Gorlocks (http://pop.webster.edu/~stclairr/gorlock.gif)
We’re the Loggers (though our mascot is now a Grizzly Bear). And I was also surprised the Evergreen Geoducks weren’t listed. I grew up a short walk from campus and still have problems equating the written with the verbal.
My high school was the Red Stickers…. meaning a red stick… at least it got better in college! we are the Tigers!
My High School is the only one in the U.S. with a Mule as our mascot…
Our Junior High mascot was the Bronco..so I always wondered where the donkey came into play..
Our mascot rocked: War Eagles! =D One of the other schools around here is the Wolverines but their mascot ALWAYS looks like a chipmunk =/
My family almost moved to a town where the school teams were the Fredonia Hillbillies.
Needless to say, when we did move, I was quite glad to be a bulldog instead! Well, okay, I didn’t exactly care about sports, but I did care about not being part of a school where hillbillies were to be celebrated.
In ye ol’ canada, my schools mascot is a ‘warm fuzzie’. aka a giant rainbow fuzz ball. Highly amusing, we have to wear them around our necks whenever showing school spirit.
What about the UNM Isotopes?
The Fightin’ Artichokes were names by a school-wide vote, if I recall correctly. The school’s colors (for those who don’t know but want to) are green and…pink.
I saw someone already mentioned Webster–I love that they made up their mascot!
I got to Whittier College. Our mascot is the Poets. I guess, looking at the list, it isn’t hideously weird, but it’s somewhat of a bizarre choice. Not exactly what one might describe as “fierce”. Rumor has it, we used to be the Squirrels.
banana slugs? haha nice puns!!
My alma mater’s teams went by The Ooks. From an Inuit word for baby owl (ookpik). Certainly adorable. Intimidating? Not so much.
you forgot the Watersmeet Michigan Nimrods! 😀
I’m definitely not from Michigan, but GO NIMRODS!!
lol the hubbers is my school
There is a school in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula called the Flivvers: a name used for one of the first Ford cars for a short time in the early 1900’s.
Go Smethport Hubbers! We may be a big wheel, but we are mighty! Smethport is the center, or “hub” of the county. So, like the center of a wheel, we stabilize it by also being the county seat. Aka…like the hub of a wheel. So became the name…Hubbers! With our mascot of a big wheel…that rarely got worn for a very good reason.
The Smethport High School is located in the hub (heart) of Smethport, PA, therefore; creating the marvelous idea of The Hubbers 🙂
Ha im a smethport Hubber. The wheel is cuz where in the center of McKean county hence the name hubbers . Thought it was cool tho to see us on this list
I’m one of those those Hubbers????????
How about the Green Waves…..neighbors to the Hubbers
Smethport’s mascot is a wheel because it is the center of McKean County (it’s where the Courthouse for the county is located) and all roads from it extend to all the other major locations in the county. Think of a hubcap on a car tire, hence the term Hubbers. It may seem strange to people not from the area, but it makes logical sense to people from the area.
My high school was Brighton barons as in a wealthy land owner… our mascot closely resembled Mr. Monopoly
Oswayo Valley Greenwaves! Yup Green Waves
Really disappointed the Oswayo Valley Greenwaves didn’t make it on here. We are literally a wave, that is green.
My high school mascot was a lumber jack. A freakin’ lumber jack!!!! LOL
Go smethport hubbers!!!!
Smethport hubbers are called the hubbers because they are the hub of mckean county.
We we’re the “darts” Davis Darts. Out mascot was “Dartman”. No joke. Our colors were brown and gold, jokingly poo and pee.
I can’t believe someone finally acknowledged how ridiculous Smethport’s mascot is.
I can justify the Hubbers, Smethport is the hub (center of) Mckean County PA. Not a very intimidating mascot for sure but that’s why we are called Hubbers.
I’m a Hubber. It’s because Smethport is the ‘hub’ of McKean county.
Proud to be a hubber
as my kids will too
I moved to Smethport, pa and graduated as a Hubber. It’s a Wagon wheel as a mascot, because we were the county “hub”. Trying to explain it to people is humiliating.
The smethport hubbers was my school. They actually came up with the hubbers because out town is close to the center of our county. So they thought of it like we where the hub of a wheel. Our mascot is a wheel.
I actually found an extremely old book on the history of Pennsylvania in Pattee Library at Penn State in the early 1980’s (I think it was before 1920). I looked through it, and it said that Smethport was the county seat and that the roads radiated out of it like spokes radiating from the hub of a wheel.
