ModCloth’s Merch Editor Christen knows a thing or two about travel! Fresh off her honeymoon in Costa Rica, we asked Christen to share how she packs her overnight bag like a pro. Check out her tips and tricks below!

“Before taking off for a weekend trip, I think we all check the weather obsessively to ensure we’re packing accordingly,” Christen says, “The trick is planning to dress in layers, and let the accessories make the statements.” A simple, but sweet black dress is perfect for that! Christen would wear it atop jeans for the drive, then swap out the skinnies for cute tights before heading out on the new town for dinner.

Sleek sunglasses and a cute layering piece are two more must-haves. Christen opts for a comfy-cute cardi in a solid color with some crocheted details that add interest to her classic black frock.

Even if it’s not supposed to be chilly at your destination, a scarf is one thing you should always add to your bag! “It can act as a great pillow for a quick nap during the journey there!” Christen says, “Plus, if you don’t end up wearing it around your neck at all, it will look just as cute (and remain out of the way) on the handle of your bag.”

Two more things she never travels with out: a water bottle and a swimsuit. It’s important to listen to your body and stay hydrated while on the road or in the air so that you feel your best when you arrive! And the swimsuit? “You never know when a spontaneous swimming opp might pop up!”

One final tip from Christen: “A common, but outdated fashion misconception is that you can’t mix black and brown. I love both tones for their versatility, and by combining them consistently throughout your look, you avoid it seeming unintentional.” She opts for brown booties that match her brown bag. That color coordination keeps the combo of base tones concise!
