Today I’ve decided to see what outfit options lie in the fashion-forward Comedy and Tragedy Dress. First and foremost, I have to admit that I really, really love this dress. When it comes to sophisticated styling, you can’t go wrong with classic black and white (see: Chanel). Nothing beats the aesthetic sensation when midnight black collides with eggshell white, creating a chic contrast that’s incredibly versatile. With that in mind, I wanted to maintain the focus of each outfit on this sleeveless, terrifically tiered frock.
As previously mentioned, a black and white dress is (usually) quite sophisticated. If you’re planning to accessorize an already formal frock, choose your jewelry wisely, as you wouldn’t want to create an outfit that’s overwhelming with fanciness. For embellishment, the Girl’s Best Friend Brooch falls just below the satin waistband, adding a smidgen of sparkle to a sea of blackness. To continue with the theme of blooming beauty, the Burst of Spring Ring in Black and the Glass Slipper Heels are a logical next choice. The brooch, ring, and heels all features an ornate, chrysanthemum-like detail which is flirty, feminine, and fabulous. Finally, amplify the stark white, pleated collar of the bodice with the Magnificent Magnolia Necklace – an oversized, opulent statement accessory that deserves a spot on every girl’s necklace tree.
For the final touches to this elegant ensemble, add an artist flourish with the enchanting Composition VII Hat, and cover up using the Asterisk Knee Highs. These crocheted socks are long enough to double as tights with a lengthy skirt, and cute enough to wear with everything from shorts to skirts and dresses. I believe a fashionably flawless outfit should possess a subtle quality, or two, which make it truly impeccable. For this look, I love how the vertical pleats of the tiered skirt mirror the columns of detail in the hosiery.
Overall, the formalized version of the Comedy and Tragedy Dress is fairly straightforward – a sparkling jewel here, a textured tight there, and a unique, colorful accessory to keep things interesting!
Now, onto the challenge! How does one downplay a frock that’s naturally quite elegant? As a general rule of thumb, adding a cardigan (especially a knit) can instantly create an easygoing vibe. The periwinkle prettiness of the Olallieberry Cardigan seamlessly complements the black and white dress. For accessories, stick with florals, again utilizing the Magnificent Magnolia Necklace, with the addition of the Pretty Pretty Princess Headband and the Betsey Johnson Rose Garden Tights. A sweater knit pair of tights, complete with a playful floral print, ensures your ensemble will be both casual and practical for the cold weather season!
Lastly, to complement the sparkling gold in your sole piece of jewelry, try the Goldsmith Flats on for size. These classic black shoes have the slightest flair of formality in the gold chain ankle strap, but their flat construction makes them an everyday necessity.
What do you think? What works best about these separate versions of the Comedy and Tragedy Dress? Tomorrow, BB Dakota’s Luminary Dress will be put to the test!
