What do you get when Star Trek meets Mad Men? Shonna and Buck’s amazing ‘60s-style wedding—one that would both make geeks and vintage lovers swoon! Here, Shonna gives us the details about the big day and shares the inspiration behind her look.
Tell us how you met.
We met online about 5 years ago. I know online dating is huge now, but when we first started dating it was still a bit taboo! People would definitely be hesitant when we said we met via a dating website. However, if an algorithm can match you with your best friend, what can you not like! So after messaging online for a few weeks, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t being “catfished.” So I made him have a Skype date where we can have coffee and just get to know each other better. Soon after, we met for the first time and have been together ever since.
Any words of wisdom for couples who just got engaged?
My wise words for newly engaged couples is “don’t sweat the small stuff.” Always remember even through all the stress of picking decor, guest lists, and crafting in my case, that you get to marry your best friend! The coolest, yin to your yang. Your person. Never lose sight of what’s really important on that day. You and your Partner.
What was the style inspo for your look?
Our style inspiration for our wedding was “midcentury Star Trek” since my SO is a huge trekkie and I love all things ’60s/retro :). So I used the main color scheme of the original series, (yellow, red, and blue), added some Mad Men touches and lots of gold and BAM, our ’60s Star Trek wedding was born.
Describe your fave moment from the big day.
It’s a tie! One of my favorite moments from our wedding day was our first dance. We jive danced to “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen. It was just MAGIC! The other is when I saw my bridesmaids in their complete looks—made by my MOH and myself to mirror the uniforms for Star Trek. They came out perfectly!
Whose family got craziest on the dance floor?
I would have to say my family got the craziest on the dance floor! There was a point when my nephew was teaching the entire dance floor (including Grandparents) the “Cupid Shuffle.” Also, I think having all our families together dancing in a Soul Train is a memory that will last forever.
Live long and prosper, Shonna & Buck! Thank you for sharing your story.
